Olive asked, âHey, whereâs Jo at? I thought sheâd be here this week.â
Rolling her eyes, Alex responded, âSheâll be here tomorrow.â Alex was busy putting the final touches on her new outfit. They had all gone downtown to the touristy stores for a little shopping. Alex was in heaven. Having her friends was like the relationship sheâd always wanted to share with Jo. They went out shopping and tried on outfits. They picked out accessories for one another. Theyâd had lunch, then they headed back to the house to get dressed for the evening.
Other than Jacqueline, who was waiting downstairs, everyone was upstairs with their doors open running back and forth from room to room giggling and getting dressed. Alex had no need for Jo to come. She had everything she needed in her friends, but sheâd been invited. And, now, Jo was coming. Alex decided not to think about it. Instead, she made a perfume cloud to walk through. Once sheâd paced through it sufficiently, she yelled for the others.
âWhereâs my bitches?â she screamed as she walked out of her room.
Like prostitutes, they appeared in their doorways. Paige was wearing a belted, lace, red and black tulip dress, and black heels. Mallory had curled her hair, so that it looked like waves. Olive had applied a face full of makeup. As Alex talked to Paige in the hall, she thought back on the quiet, maternal Paige that she had grown used to, but told Paige âThis,â pointing to her outfit, âis the Paige that I want to see more of.â
Paige blushed and told her, âStop it.â As Paige left to join Jacqueline downstairs, Alex swatted her on the butt. Olive was in Malloryâs room watching her finish her hair. Olive stood in the doorframe of the bathroom barefoot in a black leather strapless dress. Her wavy hair had been washed, dried, and mousse applied. It was dry but had the look of being wet. Alex reached out and touched.
Olive grabbed her hair and said, âHey, donât mess it up.â
âIs that possible?â Olive swung like she was going to hit her. Alex dodged her hand.
âOh, look at you limber in heels!â replied Mallory .
Strutting around, Alex said, âI can do anything in heels.â
Teasing her, Olive said, âI bet you can. I bet thatâs why Elet gave you that big ring.â Olive went to grab her hand and noticed that Alex wasnât wearing her engagement ring. Olive asked, âUm, whereâs the ring?â
âIâm not wearing that thing tonight. Itâs a mood-killer.â
âWhose mood is it killing? Ours? Yours? Or the guy youâre waiting to talk to?â Mallory asked as she finished with her hair.
âShut up. Letâs go.â Alex walked out the room.
Downstairs, Jacqueline was outside sitting in a lounge chair. Alex walked up and said, âSee, you look nice. Arenât you happier with that than whatever you were going to wear?â
Jacqueline stood up in her long, black skinny jeans and polka dotted fitted button up. She did look nice, but she wouldnât dare admit it.
